Citalopram belongs to SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and is an antidepressant which is used in the treatment of major depression conditions in a patient. Depression is largely related to the imbalance of certain chemicals released and produced by the brain.

Citalopram works by preventing the uptake of one such neurotransmitter called serotonin. This is the most important mechanism to help remove the released chemicals and stops them acting on nearby nerve cells.

Celexa is the brand name that produces this drug. This is also used to cure a number of other diseases like obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD); certain eating disorders like bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa; social anxiety disorder, posttraumatic disorder and panic disorder.

Drug Dosage

Celexa is a prescription medicine and must be taken under complete guidance of the physician. Since the drug is an anti depressant, it may have certain physical or mental side effects.

The usual dosage is 20gms in the morning or the evening which may be increased to 40gms. However the accurate dosage must be decided by the doctor as a lot depends upon the extent of treatment and the results vary from patient to patient in different cases.

The drug should not be stopped or the dosage should not be changed without consultation with the doctor as it may lead to further complications and side effects. Like any other antidepressant there is always a possibility of physical dependence or some kind of psychological dependence on the drug. Celexa withdrawal symptoms tend to occur due to abruptly stop the intake of the drug.

Side Effects of the Drug

On facing some common side effects of the drug, like loss of appetite, vomiting, stuffy nose, weakness, heart burns, loss of memory, agitation if the patient stops taking the drug, the body starts to show some other kind of more fatal symptoms called the Celexa withdrawal symptoms.

The patient is bound to suffer such withdrawal symptoms no matter what the amount of drug he is taking. The symptoms starts to occur in as little as 8 hours after the patient misses his dose and can last for at least 8 weeks or may be more afterwards. It is however not necessary that the patient should be taking a constant dosage to get such symptoms, if he shows them he should visit the doctor immediately without delay.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Celexa withdrawal symptoms could be fatal. The patient feels headache, dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, tremors, diarrhea, vomiting, restlessness, nausea and abdominal pain. In some patients, symptoms like, blurred vision, anorexia, agitation, flu symptoms, joint and muscle pain, irritability, vertigo, gait disturbances, sleep disturbance, aggression, fever, tingling sensation and increased sweating tend to show up.

These symptoms could be more horrifying as the patients sometimes get vivid dreams, nightmares and suffer from severe visual hallucinations. Due to all these reasons the patient should be closely monitored if he wants to stop the drug intake rather than abruptly stopping it on his own.

The withdrawal symptoms are even worse than the actual disease as the drug has a short life span in the body and was abruptly stopped which can lead to severe complications, more severe than the disease for which it was prescribed at the first place.

Celexa Withdrawal symptoms occur when the drug intake is stopped, in other words the patient starts showing what is called SSRI discontinuation syndrome. In most cases these symptoms are prompted by the drug leaving the patients body rather too quickly. The patients need to have hope and courage. They must not hastily stop the treatment.

Mostly these symptoms tend to disappear over a period of time which varies from person to person. The doctors recommend tapering off the celexa therapy instead of abrupt discontinuation, this will minimize the severity and occurrence and of the withdrawal symptoms. A liquid dose is generally deliberately prescribed for a relatively gradual and slow tapering down effect. The patient's prescription may be re-arranged in to progressively lesser dosages. For example if he was prescribed with a 20mg dose, the tapering down will be in the form of dividing it into proper tapered reductions of 20, 15, 10, 5 and 2.5 mg of the drug.

Most patients wean off celexa successfully and do not experience such Celexa Withdrawal symptoms for long especially when the drug is weaned off at an optimal pace and tapered off under the careful supervision of the physician.
